"Tall Red Pine Hoods on the Way to Gramma's House"


"The Icy Breath of Old Man Winter" - This extremely rare image was taken right before the melting of the snow and hoar frost on the branches in the ravine of this miniature forest. Note the pathway on the lower right.


"Color Canopy" - Blog host serendipitously stumbled upon this rainbow of colors illuminating the forest sky. In "Dixie" (Southern Utah), we see here a rare display of all three colors of the Quaking Aspens: red, orange and yellow.


"Ancient Forest" - This bevy of primordial giants was discovered by blog host, many a moon ago. It was whilst hiking near an old mining camp road at the zenith of one of the Wasatch's tallest mountains.

"Transparent Turquoise" - This algae-laden remote lake exudes its natural beauty in this clear July morning. The seven minute topographical maps list this as Upper Red Pine Lake. The hike normally takes two days to reach this location.


"Roadside Snow" - High up in the altitudes of the Wasatch range, Old Man Winter lingers even in the late spring. That year an estimated 1100 inches of snow fell; blog host had to snowshoe to arrive at this remote location.

"Purple Ice"


"A Stick in the Mud" - Gnarled driftwood and emerald reflections.


"Golden Reflection" - This once-in-a-lifetime lucky shot shows the intermeshing of the red and green pines. Contrary to belief, the red pines are indeed perennial. Many people falsely believe that the red color is caused by the aging or dying of the green pine needles; this is not so. Note: In his long career of photographing in the Wasatch Mountains, blog host has witnessed and photographed the same full-blown, non-wilted red pine trees, over a span of many years. - ed.


"Moonscape Over the Wasatch" - Approaching twilight on a summer's eve, a rare moment above White Pine Lake. Note: To obtain this vista takes an arduous all-day hike, exacerbated by the additional climbing over these treacherous rocks. -ed.


"Mosquito Row" - This lake is one of three in the vicinity. All three lakes are named after original Mormon pioneer women, as follows: Lake Mary, Lake Martha (above) and Lake Catherine. Note: Blog host found this lake inundated with mosquitoes - ed. P.S. Don't forget your bug spray.


"Glacial Reflection" - Giant logs and glacial sediment serenely still, as seen in this early summer picture from Red Pine Lake, Wasatch Mountains, N. Utah. Note: This all-day hike is rather strenuous when one has to trudge through miles of snow. -ed.

"Snow Pyramid" - Spring caught off guard by Old Man Winter.


"Glacier Quad" - Goblins, mushrooms, a shark tooth and a frozen mouse. Lower left: A natural snow sculpture resembling a giant mushroom, and a frozen mouse nearby. Lower right: Natural snow sculptures and setting sun bring forth figures of goblins and a giant shark tooth. Upper right and left: Melting and freezing temperatures produces a Great Wall of Snow.


"Autumn caught off guard by winter" - Red, orange, green and white produce an unusually chromatic sight.

"One man in a rubber tub, rub-a-dub dub" - The fisherman, the photographer and the hiker opted for the fresh air, all the rest went to the fair.


"Little Switzerland" - Grandiose reflection found at Lake Blanche, in the hinterlands of the Wasatch Mountains, N. Utah. Note: This is one of the more strenuous hikes in the region, leading to Sundial Peak. - ed.
